How Long Do Ships Stay in Ports?

Another year is almost over, and another year with problems with transportation, logistics, and so on. But in the face of adversity, the marine industry – and Agemarin has been no exception – has gone the extra mile to provide the best transportation, port services, etc.

But, in the face of all these issues, Agemarin brings you all the information so that you can sail with more peace of mind and feel closer to the maritime world.

Although it may depend a lot on the port, country, and type of vessel or ship we are talking about, we hope to give an understandable approximation of how much time a vessel spends in a port.

Port Times and Congestions

According to Statista, “In 2020, container ships spent an average of around 0.71 days in a port during a port call. Container ships spent the least amount of time at Japanese ports, with a median time of 0.34 days. Russia ranked last, taking a median time of 1.31 days to load and unload containers from ships at its ports.”

In other words, the timing can be very variable between countries and the intentions of the vessels in port. The supply chain depends on near-perfect timing, as certain products on vessels cannot stay on the ship for very long, like blood vessels (the ones that carry blood) or waste products.

There are times when vessels and ships in ports can cause problems beyond covering a space there. In December 2021, Los Angeles and Long Beach ports had more than 80 vessels in port simultaneously. With an average wait time of between 18 and 24 days. This means more than 200,000 cargo containers were currently waiting to dock at these major ports for global trade.

But this did not only happen in California but also in the port of Seattle, with a waiting time of about 21 days. Huge congestion for people who depend on their shipments at exact times. Another of the conflicts that COVID-19 brought to day-to-day maritime transportation.

Waiting Time

If we put aside the congestion of vessels and ships in the ports, we must also take into account how much time a vessel must spend in port, whether it is loading or unloading, as well as all the legal processes it has to go through.

In the United States, just unloading the ocean vessel can take 1-3 business days, because many ships have more than 10,000 containers on board.

But this is different in all countries; according to Statista, dry cargo container ships spent around 0.69 days in a port during port calls. Comparing median time, Japan is found to be the best performer with 0.35 days, and Australia is the worst with a median time of 1.18 days. UNCTAD reports declare that the median ship turnaround time is 0.97 days globally.

In other words, it is customary to maintain a margin of knowing how long a vessel or ship will last in port. But thanks to COVID, and its consequences on transportation and logistics, we can no longer take these times for granted.

It is better to talk to a professional who can tell you all about the times and costs to get the best service at the best price.
