Vessels in International Maritime Trade

Did you know that more than 80% of goods in international trade move across the sea?

That's right, exports, and imports sail the world's seas. In Mexico, merchandise arrives and departs through the different national ports of the Gulf and the Pacific.

Maritime transit is so important in world trade that thousands of ships are waiting to unload in Mexican ports, but have you ever wondered how are the ships that transport goods, what are their characteristics? In this post, we will learn more about those giants that ply the seas of the world in international maritime trade and foreign trade. 

The classification of vessels is mainly due to the cargo they carry, for example: Cargo service vessels, specialized vessels, port service vessels, however, in this installment we will only talk about Cargo service vessels, cargoes that we at Agemarin know very well.

What are Cargo Service Vessels?

There are three types of vessels that fall into this category: dry cargo vessels or also called solid cargo, liquid cargo vessels and mixed service vessels that combine both characteristics. Get to know all of them.

Bulk Carriers, the Dry Cargo Ships!

Dry cargo vessels transport heterogeneous bulk cargo, which means that it can be in bulk or fractioned, these vessels are also known as bulk carriers. The vessels are designed with structures that protect the transfer of goods, they have rigging, cranes, refrigeration, or freezing service and on the main deck they have hatches through which the cargo is introduced into the holds. 

This type of vessel depends on the port terminal facilities, since they lack equipment for loading and unloading maneuvers. Their cargoes can be cement, salt, wood, grains, minerals, chemicals and more.

Tankers or Liquid Cargo Vessels

Liquid cargo ships or Tankers, transport liquid cargo, their main feature is that the hull is divided into tanks, the same that have a pumping service for the proper movement of unloading of the goods. These vessels, specialized in international maritime transportation, transport chemical products, liquid foodstuffs, oil, natural gas and its derivatives (liquefied gas).

Tankers and oil tankers on the world's shipping lanes are built with double hulls to increase the strength of their structures.

Ore Bulk Oil or Mixed Service Vessels

This type of merchant vessel has the characteristics to transport different types of goods and cargoes, and is very profitable for the shipping industry. Among their characteristics they have reinforced areas on deck to receive the indivisible masses and are equipped with electrical sources for refrigerators, tanks for liquids, access ramps for container equipment.
